Right off the bat, you can tell he's a friendly talkative sort of guy. After making a few adjustments to Finn's drum set, he immediately got down to business and asked Finn to play a groove. After a minute or so, Mr. Canaan joined in with the groove, and they did a little duet. All this while my mom is on the phone and I am holding up the receiver so she can hear. Love your enthusiasm mom!
What impressed me most was Canaan's ability to interact with Finn. It was so cute watching them all huddled up in the drum corner, pouring over the sheet music, as thick as thieves. Mr. Canaan would point at the notes and ask Finn to play this or that. Rat-a-tat-tat.
I don't think they even noticed this paparazzi!
I don't think they even noticed this paparazzi!
Back and forth they went, discussing hi-hats and snares. A quarter note here, an eighth note there. 1&2&...
"Give me hi-five!", Canaan would say.
Pretty soon our half hour lesson was almost up.
But Mr. Canaan did not leave after half an hour. In fact, he was just getting warmed up. They played page after page of music. They were on a roll. Canaan is obviously quite passionate about drumming. And teaching!
He ended up staying for 1 1/2 hours, getting to know our FInn boy. He listened very carefully to Finn's quiet and solemnly serious responses. Canaan did not want to put a damper on Finn's natural love for drumming with tedious drum techniques. These things will come later on, he said.
Afterward, Canaan gave us a little concert and laid down some funky grooves. We were quite impressed! I'm pretty sure this guy is too good to be true!
Yay! I'm so glad it went so well. And your pictures are amazing, as always!
